There’s a familiar face taking the turf at Miami Marlins home games! We caught up with former Sundancer and now Mermaid, Natalie Marie Gonzalez ‘21.
So tell us, what have you been up to these days?
I am now a student at the University of Miami where I am studying political science on a pre-law track with the goal of practicing intellectual property law. I am also a professional dancer, currently working for the MLB Miami Marlins, as well as a dance teacher.
How did you get into becoming a dancer for the Marlins?
I have wanted to be a pro sports dancer since I was a little kid. As part of a family that loves baseball, I went to many Marlins games and events growing up. I idolized the Mermaids dancers so much that I asked my parents to enroll me in dance classes. Becoming a Marlins dancer really was a dream come true.
Describe the excitement you feel as you step onto the turf at home games.
As I step onto the field at home games, I immediately lose all the nerves. It is the happiest, most empowering feeling. The sound of fans cheering for us and the support from my amazing teammates is always very encouraging. The seemingly intimidating ballpark has become a comforting second home to me.
Are there any Gulliver teachers or coaches that you credit as having a positive influence on you?
Ms. Gerri was incredibly influential in my life and dance career. She taught me how to trust myself and believed in me when no one else did. She is the reason I fell back in love with dance after years of being discouraged by other dance teachers. I would not be where I am today without her. All my teachers at Gulliver were amazing, but Mrs. Guerra and Coach Cal had a lasting positive influence on my life because they always motivated me and never let me settle for mediocrity. My all-time favorite class was AP Economics, taught by Mr. Melchor.
What is your most memorable Gulliver moment?
A memorable Gulliver moment is when my graduating class jumped in the swimming pool on the last day of school. Mr. Sandaal and other faculty joined us as well. I love this memory because it started a tradition and it was a fun way to close that chapter of our lives.
