We recently caught up with Gina Menendez Lacayo ‘05. Read on to learn more about how she is continuing her family’s legacy, her passion for giving back, and her advice to current Gulliver students.

What are you up to these days?

These days, I am deeply involved in running and growing my business as a McDonald’s Franchisee right here the city I was born and raised in, Miami. When I am not focused on work, I am enjoying life as a wife to my husband Gonzalo, whom I met almost 20 years ago while attending the University of Miami. My most treasured role, though, is being a mother to our three young daughters: Catalina, Alessandra, and Luciana. Juggling the demands of work and family life is a balancing act, but every moment is rewarding and meaningful.

What do you like about the work you are doing now? Describe your career path.

I really enjoy the work I’m doing now because it allows me to continue the legacy that my father started 45 years ago. Together with my two brothers, who are also Gulliver alumni, we now own 15 McDonald’s restaurants. It’s deeply fulfilling to be part of a family business that has been a cornerstone of our lives for so long.

Additionally, It’s incredibly rewarding to break barriers and set an example for other women aspiring to make their mark in similar fields. Balancing the responsibilities of running a successful business while holding myself accountable in my role as a mother is the gratifying challenge I give myself everyday.

Is there anything you learned during your time at Gulliver Prep that you feel was helpful in your life after Gulliver?

During my time at Gulliver Prep, I learned the importance of strong community ties and the impact of giving back. These lessons have been incredibly valuable in my life after Gulliver. I have carried this sense of community with me into my personal and professional endeavors. Currently, I am actively involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Miami, where I’m working on a capital campaign to raise funds for a new Ronald McDonald House. This new facility will double our capacity to support families in need, and it has been incredibly fulfilling to contribute to such a meaningful cause. My experiences at Gulliver Prep instilled in me a deep appreciation for community and service, which continue to guide my efforts and passions today.

Are there any Gulliver teachers or coaches you credit as having positively influenced you?

Absolutely, Mrs. Wright my Learning Center teacher had a significant impact on me. She taught me never to be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Her guidance was invaluable in showing me the importance of asking questions, seeking knowledge, and building upon the information I received. The time management and problem-solving skills I developed in her class have been crucial in shaping my business acumen today. Her lessons in persistence and resourcefulness continue to influence my approach to both my professional and personal life.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time at Gulliver Prep?

Has to be the pep rallies!! I still vividly recall the excitement and energy that filled the room. The collective enthusiasm of students, the cheers, and the sense of unity created such a dynamic and memorable atmosphere.

What has been one of your proudest moments?

Hands down, my proudest moments are tied to my three daughters. Watching them grow and knowing they will each leave their own unique footprint on the world is incredibly fulfilling. Their compassion, curiosity, and determination make me confident that they are destined to make a positive impact.

As a Gulliver Prep alum, what advice would you give to current students?

My advice to current students is to start building their professional skills early. I’d encourage everyone to consider taking on a part-time job or internship while still in school. Gaining real-world experience and understanding workplace dynamics can be incredibly valuable. It also helps in building a professional network, which can give you a competitive edge when entering the job market. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes along the way, these experiences are essential for growth and learning. Embrace every opportunity to explore and develop your interests—it will serve you well in the future.
