Over the holiday break, Sonia Murugesan ‘30 and her family traveled to a small village in India, the birthplace of her maternal grandfather. While Sonia had always known about her family’s connection to a local girls’ school, her visit offered her a firsthand look at the profound impact it has on the community. During their visit, the school hosted a ceremony to honor their arrival, giving Sonia the opportunity to meet the students whose lives are being positively shaped by the school’s efforts.

The experience was transformative for Sonia. It allowed her to connect with the girls at the school, exchange gifts, and practice languages, including English, Hindi, and Punjabi. The cultural exchange was enriching, deepening her appreciation for both her heritage and the ways in which people live in different parts of the world.

Here’s an in-depth look at Sonia’s experience and what it meant to her:

Tell us about your recent trip to India. Why did you go to this specific village? What did you do there while at the school?

A: We went to that specific village because that’s where our family grew up. My grandpa was a refugee from there, and while at the school, we gave gifts to the girls and made a donation. While I was there, I got to see how different people lived, compared to where I live now. I also experienced a cultural exchange.

What made this trip so special for you and your family?

A: This trip was so special to our family because I got to see where my grandfather grew up. It helped me appreciate the life that I live now, seeing how rural and difficult life is there without simple things like electricity and running water. It was also cool for me to see the differences, like cows producing milk instead of grocery stores.

What was the most impactful part of your experience? Why?

A: The most impactful part of my experience was seeing how hard their life is compared to mine. It helped me feel more gratitude for the life I live now. This also encouraged me to give back and help others more often.

Were you able to share your experience with your peers and teachers at Gulliver? How did they support you?

A: I shared my experience with my counselor, Ms. Gonzalez. She was very supportive and thought it was a great experience.

How has being a student at Gulliver allowed you to grow, discover new passions, and experience new ideas and opportunities?

A: Being a student at Gulliver has allowed me to have a very strong academic foundation and has helped me discover passions that I love. I’ve also had the chance to experience things I never would have otherwise. My teachers and mentors, like Mrs. Bernay, Mrs. Gonzalez, and Mrs. Zambola, have helped me a lot along my journey.

What are you most looking forward to as a high school student next year?

A: Once I am in high school, I am excited to have more leadership opportunities and extracurricular activities.

What are you involved in at Gulliver and outside of school?

A: At Gulliver, I am involved in the 7th grade Beta Club, and I am also a member of the rowing and track teams. Outside of Gulliver, I was formerly part of the Royal Palm Tennis Club.

Sonia’s journey to India not only gave her a chance to connect with the students and culture there but also ignited a passion for giving back and deepened her appreciation for her own life. With a growing commitment to community service and leadership, Sonia is poised to make an even greater impact in the years to come.
