Gulliver Prep Claims Seventh Straight All-Sports Award (5A-1A)

water polo winning state championshipFor the seventh straight year and 23rd time overall, Gulliver Prep’s Athletics Program has been recognized as The Miami Herald’s All-Sports Award winner (5A-1A). The Raiders also claimed the Girls’ Major Sports Award recognizing the top female athletics program in the county.

During the 2023-24 athletic season, the Raiders won three varsity team state championships in girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, and boys’ water polo, as well as two individual state titles. The varsity volleyball team secured the program’s first FHSAA State Championship, finishing the season with an overall record of 29-3 under Coach of the Year Emilio Rodriguez, and Player of the Year Jackie Taylor ‘24. The varsity boys’ soccer team claimed its second straight and ninth overall FHSAA State Championship, tying for the most in state history, with a 25-0-1 record and a national championship. Scott Davidson was named Coach of the Year, and Cosme Salas ‘24 was named Player of the Year for the second straight season. The varsity boys’ water polo team won the FHSAA State Championship, marking the sixth state title in program history. Carroll Vaughan was named Coach of the Year and Gabe Lewis ‘24 earned Player of the Year honors.

In girls’ swimming, Swimmer of the Year Reese Rosenthal ‘25 won an individual state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke. In boys’ track & field, Aaron Gold ‘25 became the adaptive state champion in shot put and javelin.

En route to the Athletics Program’s 66th, 67th, and 68th state championships, Gulliver claimed five regional championships (girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ water polo, boys’ water polo, girls’ swimming) and nine district titles (football, boys’ basketball, boys’ tennis, boys’ lacrosse, girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ water polo, boys’ water polo, girls’ swimming). Over the course of the year, 30 student-athletes earned Miami Herald First Team All-Dade recognition, six student-athletes were named Player of the Year in their respective sports: Jackie Taylor ‘24 (volleyball), Cosme Salas ‘24 (boys’ soccer), Gabe Lewis ‘24 (boys’ water polo), Kathleen Serig ‘25 (girls’ water polo), Reese Rosenthal ‘25 (swimming), and Sebastian Schnur ’25 (Boys’ Lacrosse). In addition, twenty-three student-athletes committed to play intercollegiate athletics.

volleyball team winning state championshipAdditionally, Emilio Rodriguez (volleyball), Scott Davidson (boys’ soccer), Carroll Vaughan (boys’ water polo), Nick Folker (swimming) and Eric Cartelle (boys’ lacrosse) received Miami Herald Coach of the Year honors, and Jackie Taylor ‘24 and Dominic Veloso ‘24 were selected as Scholar-Athlete of the Year finalists.
