Gulliver parents Jennifer and Philip Lee P ‘34 have made a generous donation to establish the Lee Family Merit Scholarship, a new opportunity within the Gulliver Merit Scholarship Program.
In each of the next four years, one student entering sixth grade who demonstrates academic excellence will be selected as a Lee Family Merit Scholar. The scholarship covers 75% of tuition costs in the first year and in each subsequent year through graduation, as long as recipients continue to show strong academic progress.
The Lee’s, who have a child in third grade at Gulliver, said they wanted to provide talented, high-achieving students with access to the same world-class education that they were once afforded because of the hard work of their Korean-born parents who came to the U.S. to pursue a better life for their family.
“Education is super important for our family. The education my wife and I received, and the communities and the networks we were a part of, opened a world of opportunity that frankly wasn’t available to our parents,” said Philip Lee. “We have been inspired by the philanthropy of the Gulliver community and believe Gulliver can be one of the best schools in the nation—not just in Miami or Florida. Attracting the best students and families is integral to that goal, and we wanted to do our part. This is important to us on a personal level, as we look back on the sacrifices our parents made and ahead to Gulliver’s future and place within Miami.”
The Gulliver Merit Scholarship Program, now including the Lee Family Merit Scholars, recognizes outstanding, high-potential students who have demonstrated a commitment to intellectual curiosity, academic achievement, and personal growth.
“Gulliver is poised to reach national prominence for next-level teaching and learning, and we cannot do that without the generosity of donors like Philip and Jennifer Lee,” said Simon Hess, Gulliver’s president. “We are grateful to them for their investment in highly motivated, accomplished scholars who have the opportunity to become tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and changemakers.”
future generations of our family. It has always been important to us to support the communities we are a part of, and benefit from, and we are very excited about growing with the Gulliver community and being a part of strengthening its future for all students.”
First Lee Family Scholar Selected
This year, rising sixth grader Annie Lai has been selected as the first Lee Family Merit Scholar. She is a high achiever in the classroom while balancing extracurricular activities she loves, such as swimming and theatre. She would also like to pursue learning a language like Spanish or Japanese.
