Mekayla Frazier ’20 Earns Semper Fidelis All-American Award, MaxPreps Athlete of the Month
On May 10, Mekayla Frazier ’20 was presented with the 2019 Semper Fidelis All-American Award and she was also chosen as the May 2019 MaxPreps Semper Fidelis Athlete of the Month. Not only is she the first Gulliver student to be chosen for these honors, she was one of 96 students selected out of 2,500 applicants across the country for the Semper Fidelis All American and one of 24 students chosen as a MaxPreps Athlete of the Month. As a MaxPreps winner, Mekayla received an honorary letterman jacket and trophy, presented by MaxPreps, the United States Marine Corps and baseball hall of famer Jeff Nelson.
Proudly presented by the United States Marine Corps, the Semper Fidelis All-American Program recognizes high school students who face life’s battles with the conviction and determination to succeed. These students embody the same fighting spirit that Marines stand for by taking on the challenges of succeeding academically while bettering their communities and excelling in athletics and extracurricular activities.
While maintaining a 4.2 GPA, Mekayla is an Honor Roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, National English and Chinese Honor Societies and Rho Kappa Social Science Honor Society, as well as an NAIS Student Diversity Leader. To name a few athletic accolades, with six varsity softball letters, Mekayla is a MaxPreps Player of the Month for softball, a team captain, a Miami Herald First Team All-State and All-County athlete, an Athlete of the Year finalist and a 2018 Extra Innings Softball First Team All-American. For soccer, Mekayla has earned five varsity letters and has been the Lady Raiders’ captain since 2018.
During her childhood, Mekayla battled a medical scare that left her in the ICU for six weeks. Once healthy, she decided to pay it forward by donating back to the ICU that took such great care of her. Each year for her birthday, she collects toys for the playroom to ensure that children battling serious illnesses have a form of escape through fun and exciting toys.
All this and more proves that her fighting spirit would not be broken. As a celebration of turning obstacles into victories through drive and passion, Mekayla will be representing the Gulliver community at the exclusive four-day Battles Won Academy, held in Washington D.C. in July 2019. There, she will participate in daily workouts, an immersive Marine Corps experience on base in Quantico, a community service event, team building outings and a tour of our Nation’s Capital. By becoming a Semper Fidelis-All American, she will be eligible for select scholarship opportunities only available to program participants.
